Academic Writer (APA 7): In-Text Citations
This video will show you how to start writing the body of your paper and add in-text citations to your paper.
Hi, it’s Rachel Walters from IWU Off Campus Library Services.
The easiest way to log into Academic Writer is through your Brightspace online classroom. Do not add Academic Writer to your bookmarks. You need to login through Brightspace every time.
There are two ways to access Academic Writer. The first is from the Tools for Success! Widget. From your course home page, scroll down to the widget and select Academic Writer.
The second way is through IWU Resources.
From your course home page, select the green Course Menu icon. In the left-hand menu, select Course Dashboard and then select IWU Resources. Find the Academic Support & Resources area, under APA Resources select Academic Writer.
If you have logged into Academic Writer before, you should automatically be logged in.
Find the blue ribbon at the top of the page. If it says Welcome and your name, you are logged in.
Remember that Academic Writer is not compatible with Internet Explorer or Edge browsers. You can use Firefox, Chrome, or Safari browsers.
Also, remember that Academic Writer and the Grammarly Chrome browser extension do not communicate well and cause errors. Be sure to disable Grammarly on the Academic Writer website. You can use the Grammarly app or Grammarly in Microsoft Word to check your paper for grammar and spelling errors after you export it from Academic Writer.
Let’s open the Writing Center by selecting the orange WRITE tab. To view a paper that you started earlier, select Go to My Papers and select the paper by clicking on the title.
This is the same paper from the previous videos. All the references are in the Paper Reference List. Remember to check your assignment requirements for details on the types and how many sources you need to use. If you notice any errors with your references click on the pencil beside it to make the needed corrections.
Start writing your paper.
This is the introduction in my own words. Now I want to add a quote from the Carter article.
Go down to the reference you want to quote from, check the box and click Cite.
There are two kinds of in-text citations that are appropriate to use. One is called parenthetical and the other is narrative. Over on the right side, you see an example of each kind. Narrative means that the author’s name will appear in the sentence instead of in a citation and the end in parentheses.
Select if your citation is parenthetical or narrative.
Select if the citation is a word for word quotation.
Enter the location information. If you are citing a PDF or article with page numbers select Page. If you are citing a webpage or a source without page numbers select Paragraph. Enter the page or paragraph number.
Type the quotation in the Quotation box.
Select Submit to continue.
A pop-up gives you some information about inserting reference citations into your paper and how to transition from your words to a quote.
Academic Writer inserted the in-text citation, including the author, page number, and formatted the quotation as a block quote.
If you are typing the quotation directly into the paper body keep in mind that when you have a quote 40 words or longer that it will need to be formatted as a block quotation. To format a block quote, highlight the quote by clicking and dragging your mouse, select Format from the editing toolbar, then select Block Quote.
The sentence does not flow right. So, an in-between or transition word is needed. I am going to use explained.
You will continue to write your paper combining your thoughts with what you have found during your research.
Now I want to add a quote from the Guerra article. The second way you can add a quotation is to directly type in into the body of the paper.
Be sure to put quotations marks around the quote if it is less than 40 words.
Next, you will create the intext citation. Place your cursor where you need to insert the citation, after the closing quotation mark and before the period.
Go down to the reference you want to quote from, check the box and click Cite.
Select if your citation is parenthetical or narrative.
Select if the citation is a word for word quotation.
Enter the quotation location information. If you are citing a PDF or article with page numbers select Page. If you are citing a webpage or a source without page numbers select Paragraph. Enter the page or paragraph number.
Select Submit to continue.
Academic Writer has inserted the in-text citation.
Notice that the quotation marks start the quotation, end the quotation then the parenthetical citations with the author, date, and page number. The period goes after the parentheses.
Continue to write your paper. It is a good rule of thumb to write the majority of your paper in your own words and support your ideas with paraphrasing or direct quotes from your references. When you paraphrase or use direct quotes remember to use in-text citations to give credit to the author and avoid plagiarism.
Before you download your paper make sure that all the references listed in the Paper Reference List have been cited in the body of your paper. Each work cited in the text of your paper must appear in the reference list and each work in the references list must be cited in the text.
To verify that the references in your Paper Reference List have been cited, scroll down to the list. Each reference that has been cited will have a green Cited button next to it.
Go ahead and preview your paper by selecting the Preview tab.
When you are ready to export your paper, select Export in the left-hand menu. Select Download. Make sure you download the paper as a Word document, which is the required format.
Before you submit your paper, check it for any spelling, grammar, or format errors.
Also, keep in mind that OCLS Librarians offer APA Review. We will look over your paper for APA errors before you submit for your assignment.
