I’m Rachel Walters, Online Librarian with IWU Off Campus Library Services.
Welcome to Personalized Search Plan for GEN-111. In this tutorial, we are going to learn about QUICKSearch and how to use it as a starting place for your research.
QUICKSearch is the library's answer to a Google search. The advantage of using QUICKSearch is that you are only getting quality information that you can use for your academic research. QUICKSearch has the added benefit of limiting to full-text documents, peer-reviewed articles, and by date. You can search QUICKsearch by topic, subject headings, or many other ways. Keep in mind that with QUICKSearch you are searching most of the IWU library databases in one easy search
To use QUICKSearch start at the OCLS homepage (https://ocls.indwes.edu). Scroll down to the bottom of the page and in the search box click on the third tab labeled QUICKSearch. Next click on Advanced Search underneath the search field.
You will be prompted to log in. Enter your myIWU login information.
You should be in QUICKSearch ready to search. In the first search box enter the term time management change the search type from Selected a Field (optional) to SU Subject Terms.
Click on Search.
You should see a very large number of article citations these results are correct as of July 8, 2019. You only need a few articles and need to be able to read, print, or download them right away. So under the Limit To section on the left-hand side of the page check the box next to Full Text. The results are displayed with the most recent articles showing first.
There is also a Publication Date slider under Limit To that you can adjust if you want articles within a certain time frame.
Look for articles that say PDF Full Text or Check Online Availability these are ones that you can view, print, download, or email to yourself.
Here's an example of an article that is available in PDF full text and HTML full text.
Let’s look at: It’s Easy to Get Lost in the Weeds.
To pull apart the information for your citation: The title of the article is It’s Easy to Get Lost in the Weeds. The author of the article is Christopher Zara. The name of the journal or the magazine is Fast Company. The date of the journal or magazine is December 2018 / January 2019. The issue for this article is 229. The page numbers are listed as 76 and 77 and this article is two pages long.
To see the actual article click PDF Full Text on the left side of your screen. This will pull up the article PDF. When you hover your mouse over the article page, the PDF toolbar will drop down and you can download or print your article.
When you are finished with this article click << Result List in the top left corner to return to your search results.
We hope you have found this video on how to navigate QUICKSearch helpful.
